Brilliant session as usual. We are going to need an extension to An Scioból if the crowds get any bigger. Great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones of course. The ceol agus craic was mighty with the mixture of young and not so young musicians playing together comfortably. We are already looking forward to our next session on the third Friday of May. We wish all our members who are competing in the Co. Derry fleadh the very best of luck.

Our March session on the eve of St. Patrick’s day was well attended by young and old. The junior session saw the introduction of our youngest fiddle player with Cassie Kelly at just five years of age. The concentration on young Lorcan Murray’s face as he tackled the bongos was a sight to behold. The traditional singing of the Gray family was upheld by the latest generation in the form of Eileanóir who is following in the footsteps of her dad John and her granda Paddy. The disappointment on the faces of our junior members when they were told that the junior session was over at 9.30pm was soon replaced by squeals of delight on being told that they were welcome to join in with the seniors. The Irish stew in the middle of the night was much appreciated by one and all. Our next session will take place on the third Friday of April as usual.

The first session of the new year was one of our best ever with a great many visiting musicians from all arts and parts. If this keeps up we will need an extension to An Scioból! We certainly got rid of the Christmas cobwebs. We hope to include a junior session on our next night on 17th February. Watch this space.

Our December session in An Scioból was well attended considering the icy conditions on the night. A great night’s craic was had by all. Many thanks to all the local and visiting musicians, dancers and singers who have supported us all year. We are deeply indebted to Maurice Regan for the use of the premises which we have been allowed to treat as our own and for all the help from his staff. As usual the multi-talented McKee family were the backbone of this session. We also saw the introduction of our youngest singer yet in the form of Grace Anne Kelly at 5 years old. We wish all our members and supporters a happy and musical Christmas and look forward to our next session in the new year.

There was barely room to move at the closing of our class session.

Many thanks to St. Colm’s High School for the continued use of their premises.

Saturday 19th will be a memorable day for our branch. For the first time we held a series of workshops and a fun day through the medium of Irish. A total of 65 children took part in the activities which include workshops in fiddle, tin whistle, traditional singing, céilí dancing and story telling. We also had a games session to tire them out! We owe a great debt of gratitude to the tutors – Aoibheann Devlin and Lisa McKee (fiddle), Laura Brunton and Mark McKee (tin whistle), Nodlaig Brolly (singing), Francie Convery (céilí) and Francie Brolly (story telling). A special word of thanks must go to Conor Murray who organised the games and kept control of the general mayhem with the aid of his trusty whistle. The enthusiasm of the children taking part was a delight to behold. No doubt we will be repeating this successful venture in the future.

Our junior session was well attended as usual and it is evident that the tutors’ work is paying dividends by the standard of musical ability on show. The older hands were only too willing to let the youngsters take the lead during the full session that followed. A special welcome was given to the visiting musicians from other branches. Please note our December session will be on Saturday 17th.

Ballinascreen played host to the annual county dinner which was held in The Shepherds Rest recently. As part of the 60th anniversary of Comhaltas, presentations were made to members who have contributed greatly to the success of the organisation over the years.

We kicked off the new season with a wonderful session in An Scioból. It was great to see old friends again and also to meet some from England and as far away as Philadelphia. Everyone enjoyed the mixture of music, song and dance and are looking forward to our next session in October. Please take note that the date has changed so that we do not clash with Naiscoil/Gaelscoil na Speiríní Traditional Music and Buffet night in The Shepherds Rest on October 21st. Our session in An Scioból will be on Saturday, October 22nd.

With the onset of autumn our music classes are beginning again soon. Hope to see you all back again in St. Colm’s High School and of course any new faces will be more than welcome. Classes will be given in bodhrán, fiddle, flute and tin whistle. There will be two twelve week sessions with a Christmas break between.

Ádh mór ort Helen

It was with a mixture of joy and sadness that the Ballinascreen Set Dancers said goodbye to one of our most dedicated members, Helen McEldowney, who has left to further her studies at Dundee University. Helen and her sister Emma greatly enjoy the dancing and were always more than willing to give up their time when asked to be part of our team. We hope this is a temporary parting and that Helen will call with us any time she is home. In the meantime we wish Helen every success for the future.
